Transitioning away from using lynch - alternatives and implementation

i dont particularly care if the default name changes.

i just wanted to make sure this wasn’t just pandering to people who aren’t going to join the site anyway

Look, I firmly don’t think this is a big change and am happy to discuss the best implementation but if its for anyone enough to insist to use it I’m afraid that’s a deal breaker.

the best implementation is cultural imo

How many of them agreed to join the site?

anything else is functionally censorship, regardless of the reason

If it helps, it is cultural. This was us as a community saying lets think about our language more

This 100%

oh and if you forget here’s a friendly little bot!

“Online mafia sounds cool but I don’t like how people say lynch so eh” was basically the popular response in that set.

I think y’all are seriously overlooking how culturally sensitive timeouts are

Given that I’m saying that anyone who insists on using lynch should play somewhere else that probably answers your question.

Btw I am genuinely shocked that so many people had problems with the word lynch reading this. I honestly had no idea anyone even considered the word a problem, nor that it was connected to any racist talk etc. If people have so much of a problem with it that’s fine it’s not so big a problem to change one word.

It would have been cool to get an explanation why in the first place and/or not have been racially attacked for raising a question why there was something wrong with the word, which to me is very much to as significant as the word murder.

But it’s cool here’s where we are at, if the word is that deeply routed in racism in America I have no problem with implementation of a stance against it. (Just wanted to make this clear probably off topic)

Why can’t you have a profanity filter again, that is togglable for each person, so that they can say whatever they want safe in the knowlege that they won’t hurt the people it actually matters to?

i dont like that some nebulous ‘people’ that nobody here really knows gets to dictate terms to us

that is more difficult than you’d think

By an admin no less

If people delibritely choose to bypass the filter, then take action on them. But if they stay within the bounds then they should be alright, no?

This is kinda a good idea actually, toggle it on or off if you care . Have lynch be one of those profane words maybe

I don’t even mean that. can you imagine how difficult it would be to write a script that blocks words each user is offended by and changing it into another word that means something similar but isn’t offensive?

Do you mean Search and Replace?
