Transitioning away from using lynch - alternatives and implementation

Go to the corner little Timmy the town has put you in timeout

@GTacc What is wrong with a word if you use it in a specific context? No one is meaning to be racist when using the word in context. It feels like you’re expecting players to use it in original context, instead of the context of a game of fucking Mafia.

I don’t but people who had complaints to elli does

So, people who don’t even play mafia, are complaining about mafia?

Why should we consider their opinions?

Good point tbh…

Lynch is and was a racially charged word that’s been used to threaten black Americans for decades, and describes a practice that was used to terrorize and kill black Americans.

It isn’t comparable to mafia goon or kill or whatever. If you want to compare it to something, an imperfect but closer comparison is to f*****, a word that has transformed in meaning over time to become a hateful and entirely inappropriate word, at least in the us (I can’t speak to whether it has the same connotations in other countries).

You can say “it’s just a word it means what we want it to mean” all you want but that doesn’t remove the very real negative associations many people have with it, or the fact that it makes the game less welcoming to a specific group of people. If the goal is mass appeal, not using a word like lynch to describe a core game mechanic that can easily be described in different terms is just common sense imo.

But they are not playing because they found here offensive, right? Why shouldn’t we consider their opinions?

When you walk by a group of mostly strangers and you hear them using language you find offensive, most people don’t go debating them, they leave and don’t come back.

I am most certainly not going to people who told me the felt uncomfortable with the language and go “Hey these people who you don’t know are saying you shouldn’t be offended go defend yourself and explain you’re thinking to them”. That’s absurd.

This thread is NOT for debating whether we should transition away from the word, the decision there is already made.

If they’re not playing here because of the use of a single word, they are too thin-skinned to play mafia otherwise in any case.

unless its #friendly

Based.

Why are we bending to the will of outsiders again?

Does a group of people bend to the will of one loud and obnoxious person, or do they tell them to get the hell out if they don’t want to follow their norms?

Why is making the game/site more inclusive a bad thing?

Call me a Fragment all you want, I do not care.

Why are we trying to include people who don’t play mafia in a mafia-playing community again?

We care A LOT about the thoughts of people who aren’t playing forum mafia yet. There are many people who play with their friends in real life or who have heard about it/skimmed us or other forum sites and have felt uncomfortable because of the use of the word.

With all due respect if using lynch is such a crucial part of your forum mafia experience there are 300 other sites out there that will cater to that. We’re building this place to grow the amount of people who play not to cater to the ones who do already.

That’s an inane question, why wouldn’t we try to introduce more people to the game?

Presumably we all enjoy this game, why wouldn’t we want to introduce other people to the game we love?

Fwiw, I know plenty of black people who play mafia, and I’m wondering the racial backgrounds of the people who are actually taking issue with this

Almost all African american. Obviously not every single one I talked to had an issue but maybe like 1/3 or 1/4? Primarily people I knew that played face to face in HS/College or related communities.

It’s not a crucial part of the experience, it just seems arbitrary to liberate liberty to sate those who do not agree.

I understand it, this site is small and you want to adapt to everyone. However, people will push back, as you cannot sate everyone. Is it worth the risk to sate those you don’t have and lose those you do, or to do nothing and neither lose nor gain?
