Right, but at the same time I’ve seen people try to pocket others as an indy faction since they don’t have anyone else to lean on. Don’t get me wrong I appreciate the vote of confidence, but don’t think the rationale is flawless lol.
I’ll reveal that Seth invited me to this game after we met on Mafia Colesseum. Aside from the mod I know nobody, but I’ll tell you that you can go on SmashBoards and find a bunch of games I’ve played (from around 2015-2019) to get a feel for my play. I’ve probably (hopefully lol) changed a lot from the eariler ones, but it might give you a good feel for my meta.
I know the rationale isn’t flawless, but I think it’s nice to create earlier reads on people so there is at least some substance prior to the REAL game :>
Also I believe I’m not “normal” like most other players, as usually I’ll be self-aware as either alignment, and I’ll also be way too active! You’ll never get away from me
The thing I townread most in a player is probably twofold:
If I can clearly follow their line of reasoning (and their assumptions seem to be valid given the information Town has)
If their actions align with what I’d expect from someone trying to hunt scum
The first field isn’t always reliable until people have claimed (since a Townie PR could also have info that I don’t), and the second can be fooled by poor playstyles. Another really good tool for looking for scum is analyzing how they react under pressure. Not just the reaction, but also if they’re trying to shift themselves out of the spotlight, are they responding with kneejerk OMGUS, etc.
Later in the game wagon analysis can be helpful, but I’ve noticed that more as a tool for finding patterns in possible teams (which isn’t as applicable in this context lol). All in all, though, it’s just rationality backed by gut feeling. I admittedly have a tendency to tunnel since I assume someone’s scum and then build on that foundation (which has led to many games where I’ve been completely lost after being wrong lol), but that’s probably getting into more than you asked for xD
I think that’s a pretty good answer! This game is probably going to be harder because there are no real “partners”, but I like the amount of depth you went into for that! Thanks
I think the thing I’d townread most in a player is a combination of genuine emotion / genuine analysis that would be difficult to say the least to fake as mafia. I like psychology, so I feel like the easiest way for me to get into a player’s head is to see what they are thinking and then see if I can also come up with the same thought process. If I can, then I’ll usually assume it’s genuine
I’m also gonna be very honest, I like being townread as town because it makes me feel like I’m doing something “right”, so I’ll usually try my hardest to towntell on purpose which people can take as a self-aware / tryhard scum :<
I was just about to ask, but am currently trying to figure out the quoting system lol.
Sounds good! Yeah, there’s no real “right” way to play imo. Some ways certainly have merit over others (coasting as town is awful lol), but since humans aren’t perfect (despite what your favorite politician tells you), rational analysis could be as misleading as a more psychological analysis. Your view of the game is informed by your assumptions, and unless it’s a solved game, at some point you just have to take a leap of faith lol.
Yeah, it’s an older version of the avi but the newest one I could find locally on my laptop lol. My sister made it for me back in like '05 (so I was 8-ish?), and I’ve been using it online since like 2011.
Since this is a non-standard open setup and not everyone here has played for that long, let’s do some theorizing. Anyone who gets on (or Sam if you come back tonight): if you were the Specialist, how do you think you’d use it?
Also @Seththeking could killers do a NK? Trying to determine how the Specialist could be used as a PoE tool. (i.e. I blocked X and someone died so I know they’re not this person in the rotation).
Personally I’m of the theory that a Power Role should focus on two things
One - Getting more ML’s
Two - Finding Mafia
Protection can get more ML’s
Roleblocking doesn’t do much early game (unless I misunderstand Specialist), but it does both late game
Heart Rate can find Mafia, but it’s unreliable.
I think the course of action for specialist should be protecting their townread, and then once we get to 1 Mafia, start roleblocking (if still alive)
