I donât understand the rationale behind this formatting. It also keeps changing from correct to incorrectly displayed in the post editor as I type. When I stop for a bit it renders.
x = \frac{{-b \pm \sqrt {b^-4ac}}}{2a} is what you want.
x = \frac{{-b \pm \sqrt {b^2-4ac}}}{2a}

\frac, the way the brackets are assembled/fraction is defined, etc
\frac{a}{b} becomes
\frac{a}{b}
For the relevant equation above a is {-b \pm \sqrt {b^-4ac}} and b is 2a.
